This recipe has kind of taken over all the internet searches for "homemade honey mustard" and I'm completely okay with that.

I remember a friend from high school loving honey mustard.  Every time we traveled on the bus with sports teams and stopped for fast food after the game, she'd load up on honey mustard cups from Burger King.

This was well before the onslaught of Chick-fil-a.

I remember thinking, golly she really loves honey mustard!  I liked it okay, but was never obessed.

Fast forward many years later {enter personal lives, husbands and kids} and now I am obsessed with a good quality honey mustard!

I'm not sure what changed, but I love topping it on all the things.  Of course, crispy chicken as shown here.  But also as a salad dressing {great on a good cobb salad with chopped hard boiled eggs, ham and croutons} and also on grilled sandwiches {a favorite is ham, turkey, cheese, tomato and honey mustard on a good quality bread}.

I've whipped up this batch before on a Monday and purposefully planned our week's meals around this dressing.

Again, obsessed.

Back to those fast food honey mustards that we grew up loving.

I've always had a heck of a time recreating it at home.  I mean, Arby's, McDonald's and about every other stinking fast food or chain restaurant made it better than me.  Every time I tried it, it was a complete and utter fail.  My brain obviously wasn't functioning each time as I could never figure out how they made it so creamy.  Mine always seemed runny.  And just blah.

So enter in last week when I came upon a random recipe that called for a honey mustard glaze and in that glaze was MAYONNAISE.

The light bulb finally flickered on after all these years.  That is what made it creamy and delicious. That is what gave it a lighter color instead of my dark version.  I know this 'problem' of mine seems pretty trivial, but trust me this has plagued me for years.

I literally dumped my ingredients in a bowl, whisked it together and it worked.

The very first time.

I proceeded to make some quick homemade chicken strips for dunking {boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into strips, dipped in flour, then egg, then a panko/Parmesan cheese mixture and baked at 400 degrees for 30 minutes flipping half way through}.

My kids just drooled over this dinner.  It's not one I typically do.  What kid doesn't like dipping chicken fingers into something?

Give this dressing a try.  Dip your chicken in it.  Then pour it over a salad.  After that slather it on a turkey sandwich.  It keeps perfectly in the fridge for up to one week.  It will never last that long, but you get the picture.

And the cute ramekins I served this dip in?  You can find a set of 6 HERE.

  1. You discovered the missing mysterious ingredient! ALL THIS TIME! How SWEET of you to share! Thank YOU!!!!!

  2. I just made this. I'm super picky about mayo. I only use Hellman's. But I realized I was all out it. My husband is Hispanic and he had a jar of Mexican mayo in the fridge. Which I normally wouldn't eat.
I figured I would at least try.

Soooo good. Turned out perfect !!
